Minneapolis-based Target, the second-largest discounr retailer in the country after can “conceptually” accept an employer mandate, the reportas said. Target refused to comment further, statingf that they are monitoring developmentssurrounding employer-mandated health care coveragd and are waiting until details of the proposed legislatiomn are available. However, in a May 18 news releaswe about a partnership between Target and RedBricok Health to pilot awellness program, Targe laid out its stance on healty care reform.
“Target believesd that simply expanding access to the curreny system is not sustainable and will result in highetr costsfor everyone,” according to the news release. “Aas a result, Target supports a national frameworkk for health care that allows multi-state employers to offer consistentg and uniform benefits in a cost-effectivw manner.” But Target said they would first have to see the conditions attached to the mandatwe before giving it their support, according to the report The issue of providing mandatory medical insurancwe has split big-business interests, as Presidentt Barack Obama pushes healthb care reforms.
While Obama has told lawmakere that he is open to requiringg large companies to providehealth coverage, he woul exempt small businesses. Wal-Mart sent a lettefr to Obama on June 30 supporting mandatorymedical insurance, calling Obama’xs proposal fair and adding that the requirement would ultimatel y save companies money. The retailinfg giant’s move was surprising to many, and drew criticismj from the NationalRetail Federation, which oppose s the measure.
